Meanwhile, most of my user stylesheets are just me putting margin: 0 auto; max-width: 50em; on the main content div, because apparently lots of other people don't mind having a line length of "the entire screen"?

I assume users just had smaller screens when they wrote the website, or something. I had to do that for this website too, but it wasn't really undoing a choice the designer definitely made, so I didn't post it.

That might hold for AO3, but the constellation is afflicted too, and that was made recently enough that you'd be hard pressed to find a desktop screen that narrow (and I assume nobody's writing HTML on mobile). So I think some people genuinely mind less than me.
